CIR. No. 44b. (1936-37).
TO SECRETARIES OF CERTAIN AFFILIATED UNIONS.
Dear Sir (Madam),
STATEMENT ON THE WORK OF THE INTERNATIONAL SOLIDARITY FUND FOR THE RELIEF OF WORKERS IN SPAIN.
The National Council of Labour has decided that an intimate report on the work of the above Fund should be circulated to all Trade Union Branches, Trades Councils, and Labour Parties.
In the case of Trade Union Branches we have, of course, to rely on these reports being forwarded through the Head Offices of our affiliated Unions. We are enclosing copies of the report and of a leaflet for the information of your Executive, and shall be glad if you will inform us of the number of each publication which will be required to supply one of each to all your Branch Secretaries. Immediately upon receipt of this information a supply will be sent to you.
As the report indicates it is difficult to give effective publicity through the press on this matter, but it is hoped that with your co-operation your Branches will appreciate the magnificent work which is being done and will respond to the further appeal which is being made to meet the desperate need which still exists.
May we ask you to be so good as to afford us your help by sending out to each Branch a copy of the report and of the leaflet when the supply reaches you, together with a personal letter from yourself to the Branch Secretary requesting
(a) that the report should be read at the next Branch meeting,
(b) that every effort should be made to set up an effective system of collection in aid of the Fund,
(c) that the Secretary should let you know the number of copies of the leaflet which he desires to supply to members with whom he has effective contact.
We feel that a letter from you on these lines would materially strengthen the appeal of the National Council of Labour, and on your instructions we should be glad to forward direct to your Branches, free of charge, such reasonable quantities of the leaflet (not the report) as they may desire.
