More Truth about Spain
The conflict in Spain is not a Communist revolution. It is not a fight between "religious" and "anti-religious" sections of the Spanish people.
In the last Cortes the Communists gained 16 seats out of 473 at elections, which their opponents claim gave a distortedly large representation to the parties of the Left. They cannot have it both ways !
The Workers, Peasants, Liberal Republicans and Conservative Democrats of Spain are fighting for the most Elementary Human Rights of Liberty and Social Justice against Monarchists and Fascists, and against a section of corrupt Clericals who would like to re-introduce into Spain a Spiritual and Political Inquisition.
When the rebellion started in July, 1936, there was a Liberal Republican Government in power. The programme of the Popular Front was one of essential and long-overdue reforms, all endorsed by the Liberal Republicans.
The rebellion did not break out suddenly and unexpectedly. It was planned as far back as February, 1936. In intention it is much older.
From the beginning, reactionary forces in Spain refused to acknowledge the Democratic Republic and did their best to prevent its success.
"We must move towards a new State, and for that duties and sacrifices must be imposed ! What matter if it means shedding blood ? . . . When the moment comes, either Parliament will submit, or we shall make it disappear."
So spoke, in October, 1933, Gil Robles, leader of the Clerical Fascists.
It is not true that all the " Christians " in Spain are on the side of the " rebels," and all the " Atheists " on the other side.
The Basque Catholics are supporting the Government. In other parts of Spain, many a Catholic of note has fought and died for the Government.
Franco's German aeroplanes have deliberately bombed the working-class population of Madrid in the name of religion, while Hitler, in Germany, persecutes the Catholic Church.
Civilians fleeing in panic were mowed down in cold blood by the Italian conquerors of Malaga.
In every town and village captured by the rebels they have at once shot Trade Union and Socialist leaders, Liberal Republicans and anti-Fascist intellectuals.
They have then carried out mass massacres of Government supporters. For example:
There is reliable British testimony for the fact that 1,500 working miners were massacred at the Rio Tinto Copper Mines; at Saragossa, 2,000 workers were shot; 8,000 people had already been shot in Seville at the end of October last — a clean sweep had been made of everyone whom in England we should class as Liberals. — (Manchester Guardian, Nov. 2, 1936)
What has all this to do with Franco's claim that he is ridding Spain from Bolshevism and Atheism ?
