Subject.SPAIN. - POLITICAL SITUATION 1934.
History of case.
24th August.Letter to Peter Bogner, Madrid, asking him to come to England to give information concerning the "Arbeiter-bank" of Munich.
23rd October. Reported to N.C.L. that the Communist International had invited conversations with representatives of L.S.I., and that representatives of both bodies had met at Brussels. Mr. Gillies, British representative of L.S.I.,had indicated emphatic opposition to the conversations. No commitments had been entered into, but the matter was to be discussed at L.S.I meeting in November. N.C.L. resolved that it should be made clear to L.S.I. that British Labour movement would not be party to arrangements with the Communist International.
Letter from N.U. of Boot & Shoe Operatives stating that they had received an appeal for help from the International Labour Defence (British Section), and asking if this Society was approved by T.U.C.
Copy of N.J.C. circular of June last sent, as this contained the information they required.
26th October. Mr. E. Bevin sent correspondence received by him from Edo Fimmen regarding position of Spanish Trade Unions.
30th October. Cheque for £5. 17. 4. from Oxford University Labour Club for Spanish workers. - Ack. 51st October.
2nd November. Mr. E. Bevin sent further letter from Edo Fimmen, which enclosed translation of letter from Spanish Railwaymen's Unions.
Copy of joint letter from the N.C.L. to the Spanish Prime Minister, appealing for clemency and stoppage of reprisals and death sentences.
November. Copy of confidential information about situation in Spain from I.F.T.U.
6th November. Copy of letter from Madrid to F. Adler giving information regarding the October revolution in Spain, for submission to meeting of L.S.I. Executive, 13-15 November.
1st December.Letter from I.F.T.U. enclosing two documents about the events in Spain: (1) re attitude of Anarchists; (2) Report received from Spain by International Fedn of Commercial, Clerical and Technical Employees.
4th December. Acknowledgment of above, stating that some of the information would be included in the general appeal we were sending out shortly.
5th December. Letter from Society of Friends, covering one from the Ealing Branch of the A.E.U. enclosing donation (10/-) for Spanish workers, asking that an acknowledgment be sent to the Union, as they were not doing any relief work with Spanish workers.
6th December. Acknowledgment sent to A.E.U. Branch.
18th December. Report received by N.C.L. that the Communist journal "International Press Correspondence" stated that the visit of Lord Listowel and Miss Ellen Wilkinson had been conducted under auspices of"Society of Friends of the New
Spain."
