The Face of the Peoples' Olympjad The Great Week of Peoples' Sport
P.O. Barcelona, 25th June. Though all the entries are not, yet to hand and preparations are still going on, it is already possible to say what the Peoples' Olympiad in Barcelona will be. It is now possible to sketch its general features.
Nowhere is it any longer doubted that this is the greatest international sporting event of the year, which has undertaken the defence of the Olympic, spirit, of free sport and the free cultural development of mankind. The meaning of this Olympiad has been understood by millions of free sportsmen. The Peoples' Olympiad wants to show fine achievements, indeed
it even wants to establish records. These records shall show
the broad masses of people that astonishing feats can be achieved by sporting activity and training of the body. It will be demonstrated that the majority of people to-day are in such a poor physical condition that they are far from being capable of producing such achievements. The records of the Peoples' Olympiad will be a means of propaganda for a better hygienic and physical training for the peoples, and for creating the conditions for such a training.
But the athletes at the Peoples' Olympiad - in the first class well-trained
men and women - are not thirsting for tenths of seconds and the glory of victory for their nations. All, whether in the first or the last class are serving the idea of free popular sport. For the Peoples' Olympiad is itself a mass Olympiad, a demonstration of the whole people for its physical and cultural development.
The character of this great sporting demonstration is clear. This is no party institution, no exhibition of stars, arranged by clever managers. The Peoples' Olympiad, moreover, is not a means of putting over propaganda for one country or one party under the cloak of athletic games. The Peoples' Olympiad at Barcelona is what its manifesto claimed: the realisation of the original idea of the Olympic games, which were games of the people, games of the masses.
Everyone who desires the freedom of sport is taking part in the Olympiad. Everyone who is against fascism, this modern plague, who is against systems based on force, that persecute beliefs, races and opinions.
On the 19th July, Companys, the President of the Catalonian Government, will open the Peoples' Olympiad. More than ten thousand sportsmen, representing 22 nations, will defile through Barcelona's streets; for a whole week the football-grounds will be occupied by the teams, the tracks and lawns will witness races and the games of the light athletes; the stands will be filled with tens of thousands of onlookers. A gigantic organising apparatus has been constructed to attend the sportsmen,
bring them punctually to their places, to announce the results of
