              SPAIN.
7 September 1937.        Norwich Trades Union Congress deplored fact that the legal Government of Spain is still denied the right to purchase arms necessary for its defence.   Congress declared its complete solidarity with the Spanish Government in its appeal to the League of Nations, and declared that it was the duty of the Council of the League to examine the problem in all its aspects and to propose measures, including the withdrawal of foreign troops from Spain, which would effectively safeguard the peace of nations and enable the Spanish people to recover their political independence.
13-16 September, 1937. Joint meeting of Executive of International Federation of Trade Unions and Bureau of Labour and Socialist International at Paris.
Spanish representatives asked for full restoration of commercial liberty to Republican Spain; the withdrawal of Italian and German troops; and restoration to Republican Spain of right to purchase arms for its defence.
Joint meeting re-affirmed its demand for the restoration of international law in Spain, and demanded that the League of Nations should, as a first step, take measures to:
(1) Suppress piracy in the Mediterranean, and secure the effective establishment of free navigation for all flags;
(2) Secure the withdrawal of the armies sent to Spain by Fascist Powers;
(3) Secure the restoration of the right of the Spanish Government to purchase arms.
It also called upon affiliated organisations to redouble their efforts to ensure success of their common policy.
17-19 September. Arising out of above meeting, Messrs Citrine and Jouhaux for the I.F.T.U., and de Brouckere and Longuet for the L.S.I., deputed to go to Geneva, where Council and Assembly of the League were in Session, to communicate the views of the Internationals to the representative of the democratic Governments. Conversations took place there with Government representatives of Great Britain, France and Spain.
24 September Deputation to Foreign Secretary from National Council of Labour, when Paris resolution (13-16 September) was submitted. Deputation urged restoration of international rights to Spanish Government; the re-opening of Spanish frontier, and intimation by British Government to French Government of support in this action.
