Minutes (extract) ; Manifesto on the Spanish situation (draft)

92. SPAIN:
A Draft Manifesto on the Spanish Situation was circulated, read, discussed, and finally approved for publication (See appendix).
Discussion took place on the proposal put forward by the International Federation of Trade Unions that the first week in August should be devoted to Propaganda on Spain. It was pointed out, however, that the recommendation had been made without regard to British conditions, and that the prospect of propaganda meetings during the holiday week was not such as to ensure success.
Subsequently it was 
RESOLVED:    "That the following statement should be issued with the Manifesto, and circulated to all sections of the Movement with the recommendation that Constituency and Local Parties adapt their action to their local circumstances.''
"The National Council of Labour views with alarm the attitude of the Government in relationship to the Spanish conflict.
"We warn the nation that there is a grave danger that the Government will take advantage of the Holiday Season, and of Parliament being in recess, to recognise General Franco.
"We urge the party and the Movement and all lovers of Freedom to be on their guard and to take every step open to them to protest against any such action."
