SITUATION OF SPANISH T.U.C.
For your information I enclose herewith copy of a statement about recent events in connection with the Spanish T.U.C. and the position of our colleague Caballero.
This was received at the office on 26th October last, and was sent to me by Madame Krier, the wife of the representative of Luxembourg, who is a well known delegate at all I.F.T.U. and I.L.O. Meetings.
Madame Krier, in response to our enquiry states that the news was taken from the official daily paper of the Spanish T.U.C. (U.G.T.) entitled "La correspondencia de Valencia".
Madame Krier concludes her letter (3 November, 1937) as follows:
"after the speech which Caballero delivered the Government forbade all public political speeches.
"The position of Caballero and the friends of the old and authentic U.G.T. is very critical.   Only this morning I received a letter from Tomas, which had escaped the censor, and which was accompanied by some copies and documents in which I could read that the persecution of our friends is really serious.   For instance, Caballero had to go to another town near Valencia on the 23rd October, merely to see some friends and to have lunch with them.   But on the way the police prohibited him from leaving the town - this by order of the Director of Police, a socialist, member of the same party as Caballero.   Next day this prohibition was lifted.   If I had not the protest letter Caballero sent to the President of Parliament I could hardly believe such a thing.
