(25) On 27th October, 1937, following on the instructions of Annual Conference to the National Executive to undertake a nation-wide campaign forthwith to compel the Government to abandon the Non-Intervention Agreement and to restore to the elected and constitutional Government its freedom to purchase arms, the National Executive formed the Spain Campaign Committee. This Committee decided to carry through a great campaign of national demonstrations and local meetings in support of these demands, the campaign to be wound up by a great Rally at the Albert Hall, on 19 December.
(26) It was reported in ''International Information" of 6th November, 1937, that the L.S.I. had just sent the following message to Senor Negrin, head of the Spanish Government, as well as to the Spanish Socialist Party:
"At the beginning of November it will be a year since the miracle of Madrid was achieved, inscribing for ever on the pages of history the name of the martyred town, the symbol of endurance and courage in the service of liberty.
"On the occasion of this anniversary of the glorious defence we desire to renew to the heroic combatants and to the whole people of the Spanish Republic our expressions of grateful admiration and of fraternal solidarity in their fight against insternational [international] Fascism.
"Long live Liberty in Spain and in the World!"
(27) At the beginning of November, too, an appeal was issued for the "Milk for Spain" Fund. Posters, leaflets, and collecting sheets were made available, and, with the collaboration of the Co-operative Union, a system of "Milk for Spain" tokens was organised, which placed the machinery of the 20,000 Co-operative Stores throughout the country at the disposal of the Fund as collecting agencies.
