              ON GUARD FOR SPAIN

MN and WN walk to centre of stage.
MN  What you shall hear is the tale of the Spanish people
WN  It is also your own life.
Both.  On Guard we cry!
(They walk in opposite directions to side of stage during)
Both Ch.  It is the pattern of the world today.
SW (Coming forward 2 steps)
I speak for the Spanish people 
SM (Coming forward 2 steps)
I speak for the Spanish people to the workers of the world.
WN  Men and women come out of the numbered cells
of harsh privation, mockingly called your homes.
MN  Break through the deadening screen with your clenched fists, 
unrope the bells that jangle in the steeple of the sky,
WN  Make the least gap of silence in the wall of day... .
Both Ch.  And you will hear the guns in Spain.
MN  Face here the map of your own fate and say: -
Both Ch.  This suffering shall not be in vain.
SW  Thus we plead with you our need.
SW SM  Cannot you hear the guns in Spain?
WN  Have you ever come out of the tangled undergrowth
into the clearing of history?
