Many thanks for your letter of the 21st January.
I note your remarks with regard to Mr. Bridgeman and am accordingly informing his branch of the conditions laid down for his reinstatement.
I appreciate the difficulties of keeping a record of all union branches and will try to obtain this by the method you suggest.
Political Situation in North Africa
I thank you for your letter of the 22nd January and also for the copy of ''Hansard".
I am aware of recent declarations on the position with regard to prisoners and note that a commission has been set up.   I sincerely hope that as a result, the early release of all anti-fascists will be brought about but if I had a complete file of "Hansard" I could doubtless find plenty of illustrations to show that commissions do not automatically solve problems. I still believe, therefore, that it would help the cause if the T.U.C. would express support for the commission's proposed activities.
It is now reported that we may expect a clear-cut policy on North Africa to be laid down by Mr. Churchill and President Roosevelt.  I hope that a clear statement of policy will be forthcoming and that the present disastrous situation will then be speedily rectified.       The recent appointment of M. Peyrouton has
