There are more than 10O,0O0 Spanish Republicans in France who have suffered the horrors of war for nine years. They are the remainder of the quarter of a million forced across the Spanish frontier in the early days of 1939, pursued by Franco's Moors, Italian and German troops, and Fascists.
The part played by these gallant people in the liberation of France is too well known to need repetition here. But we are writing to call your attention to their present plight, which is extremely serious.
Privation and suffering are being felt in all the liberated countries; in France, Belgium, and Holland. It would be true to say that for the time being the people of all these countries are suffering great material hardship. But for several reasons the Spanish exiles are in a worse position even than the French people, for they were homeless and without possessions when this war broke out and had already undergone three years of semi-starvation. Further, the French people have their own social welfare services in which the Spaniards cannot participate fully.
It is true that the position of these people will have to be solved as part of the much wider problem of all the displaced persons of Europe.   It is true
