Dear Mr. Middleton,
I am exceedingly grateful for your letter of the 11th instant with enclosure from Dr. Morgan.
If Dr. Morgan would be so kind as to prepare, at his convenience, of course, an account of the interview to be endorsed by the Archbishop I should like very much to have a copy and should treat it in strict confidence.
I may say that much feeling is being worked up here against us, based on the pro-Franco atmosphere created by certain church-men and it appeared that the report of the interview with the Archbishop was a complete refutation of the anti-Labour policy pursued by our enemies. If the Archbishop advised Catholics to join the Labour Party and work with you - a Socialist Party - as he is reported to have done he has taken a line definitely opposed to that taken by the leading Catholic church-men in this country.
If you can get me a Memo. from Dr. Morgan on the lines he indicated in the document you were good enough to forward on the 11th instant, I shall esteem it a great favour indeed.
