ORGANISATION OF LABOUR CATHOLIC VOTE.
I am obliged to you for your letter of the 6th November, received by me, however, yesterday, and I thank you very much for the confidence you have expressed in me in submitting to me the copy of your letter to Mr. Clynes.
This is a matter in which I have been interested for a good many years, but I have long since despaired of getting anything done from the point of view of unifying or organising the Labour Catholic Vote solidly for the Labour Movement. I have tried to do something over a series of years in all sorts of ways, and have spoken to almost everybody of note in the Labour Movement from top to bottom. I have also been perfectly candid in my views about this confidentially to the Archbishop of Westminster; and while everyone agrees with me as to the need of doing something, no one so far has been courageous enough even to tell me to go forward. Everybody seems to be afraid of the possibility of a cry of sectarian politics.
The present situation, when the religion is being exploited by the reactionaries against the Spanish Government, would have seemed an opportune moment for doing something, but I am afraid the situation remains as I have outlined.
