Please forgive my very long delay in replying to your kind letter of 15th November. May I make some tiny amends by sending "A Code of International Ethics" which we have just published, and a pamphlet by Mr. Eppstein which came out a little while ago. One cannot expect everybody to agree with everything in the Code or with its treatment, but it does represent an attempt to get at the ethical principles underlying modern problems, and this, after all, is the main purpose of the Catholic Social Guild. Eppstein's pamphlet is not going well, either because it has been overlooked as too small, or because support of the League is unpopular to-day in certain quarters. However, we are now beginning to push it.
One feels that it is more important gently to correct the errors of good people first, rather than errors of those who in any case are hostile to the Church. I used my influence with Cardinal Van Roey and the Malines Union to get the International Code out quickly, and I got Eppstein to write the pamphlet because I felt that guidance on these lines was greatly needed. In fact you will find that the Code says exactly the opposite to matter which is appearing in at least two Catholic weekly papers at the present time. I very much sympathise with your feelings in regard to the English Catholic press. It is not always well informed on principles or even on facts, It has not always tried to check up from available sources of information. It is not always in line with Catholic thought in other countries. Quite frequently we have been ahead of the times with the result that our publications have been boycotted
