ADMINISTRATION OF THE CAMP
On the resignation of Mr. Sams, Mr. Henry Brinton was appointed as Commmandant of the Camp on May 24th. Mr. Brinton had been acting as assistant to Mr. Sams.
As was only to be expected, considerable difficulties were encountered in organising the camp, especially in the first days. The staff, both voluntary and professional, have given the very best of service in meeting these difficulties. A progressive improvement has  been very noticeable.
On Monday 31st May, a meeting  the Basque Children's Committee was held. It is to be noted that while individual members of the Committee who have taken specially prominent parts in the work may have their own special sense of responsibility, the Committee as a whole bears the final and absolute responsibility for the children until they are returned to Spain.
At the meeting on the 31st certain members questioned the suitability of Mr. Brinton for his position.
During the following week strong criticisms were made by the British Red Cross (on behalf of the V.A.Ds), the Boy Scouts and the Girl Guides, on the management of the Camp. All these organisations withdrew or gave notice of withdrawal from assisting the Committee. Criticisms were very widely expressed in Hampshire and elsewhere.
