Hampstead, LONDON, N.W.6.
30th November, 1938.
Mrs. B. Barclay Carter,
Hon. Secretary,
The People and Freedom Group,
32, Chepstow Villas,
LONDON. W.11.
Dear Mrs. Carter,
I have taken some time to consider your letter of the 31st October last, and while I am prepared to join you as you ask, I think your Group should be reorganised on an entirely different basis.
I hope you will not mind, seeing that you have asked for my help and advice, if I start right at the outset to give you my views.
You know that I will help you to get your paper known to Catholic Labour people. I think one ought to have some knowledge of the psychology of the Catholic Labour people. — While they hold strongly to their religious convictions they are at the same time strong and virile supporters of the Labour Party, with all its defects as it is at present constituted. Many of them are quite confused about general policies and even particular details, but these two aspects stand out: they intend to be Catholic and they intend to vote Labour. A name such as yours therefore, "The People and Freedom Group", makes no appeal whatever to them, and, I think therefore it would be wise for you to consider the advisability of reconstituting yourselves and calling yourselves, say, "The Democratic Catholic League."
Then again such an organisation should have a general policy stated in its literature. It should state the things in which it is in favour and the things which it is against.
A quarterly journal is not of the slightest use to these people. It must preferably be weekly, but certainly not less than fortnightly.
