BASQUE CHILDREN'S COMMITTEE
MINUTES of the Executive Committee Meeting held at the House of Commons on June 7th, 1937, at 3.30 p.m.
PRESENT: The Duchess of Atholl, M.P. (In the Chair) Miss Anderson (The Society of Friends) Lt. Col. 1. MINUTES:
The Minutes of the meeting held on May 31st, having been circulated, were signed as correct.
2. ARISING OUT OF THE MINUTES
(a) Constitution of the Committee: The Chairman raised the question of the Hon. Secretaryship. She suggested that the all-party character of the National Joint Committee be maintained on the Basque Children's Committee and that Mr. Grenfell and Captain Macnamara be appointed along with Mr. Roberts. The Duchess also reported that Major Hill was unable to take the Hon. Treasurership. She had, however, asked Captain Macnamara whether he would be willing to take on the finance as the question of getting out appeals and the signing and endorsement of cheques was urgent. Mr. Roberts felt we should have a national figurehead, with possibly someone who would undertake to relieve him of the detail; suggested that Captain Macnamara might be willing to do this. Agreed, therefore, in principle that the three Hon. Secretaries be appointed and that one or other, possibly Captain Macnamara, should interest himself especially in the question of finance.
Mr. Roberts also raised the question of the relationship of this big body to the small committee which was taking decisions in regard to the centres. He suggested that this committee might be the Council for the Basque Children with a smaller executive which could be summoned quickly as necessity arose.
