Homes for groups of Basque children

              HOMES FOR GROUPS OF BASQUE CHILDREN
A group of sympathisers that wishes to offer a home to a number of the Basque children at present in this country, will probably find it necessary to enlist the maximum support from their locality. This is best done by a deputation to the Mayor or some other prominent person with a view to a  public meeting being held in order to elect or add to a Committee and arrange for the collection of subscriptions, clothing &c.
Accommodation. 
The number of children to be accepted will obviously depend upon the accommodation that can be secured, but the National Joint Committee asks that it should not be less than 25. The Basque Government wishes the children to retain their language and identity during their stay in this country, so smaller groups are inadvisable and no other children should be in the Home.
In view of the very great difference in types of buildings available at short notice, it is difficult to lay down an uniform standard, but any large private house, school or hospital that is not at present in use can usually be adapted. Recreation grounds in the immediate vicinity are essential to the health of the children, and accommodation for supervisory staff must not be forgotten.
The National Joint Committee will not be prepared to sanction the arrival of a group of children to any Home unless the local Medical Officer of Health is prepared to certify that the premises available are suitable for the number of children it is proposed to accommodate.
