REPORT ON FATHER GABANA'S REPATRIATION LIST.
No. of children on list 832
" " " " supplementary list 44
" " " not traced 50(see note 1)
" " in Catholic homes 439
" " " in non-Catholic homes 343
" " applications which appear authentic 493(see note 2)
" " '' unauthentic 339 (see note 3)
" " children asked for by mother only 70 (approx.)
" " " asked for by others than parents 17(see note 4)
NOTE 1. Children not traced. This is due to either: -
a) illegible writing, in very few cases
b) major inaccuracies in name - e.g. Albizu Medivilla instead of Mediavilla Oseguera, although as will be seen from the example every effort has been made to trace all names.
c) children definitely not here, as is true in most cases.
NOTE 2. 493 applications which appear genuine are those which give full and accurate information on essential points. Of these there are 28 whose repatriation has already been asked for through other channels, viz: Authorities in France, Bilbao or the Foreign Office.
NOTE 3. The authenticity of those applications appears less certain owing to inaccuracies, omissions and irregularities which may be summarised as follows:-
a) certain cases (see appendix) are particularly interesting as showing that some parents are definitely opposed to the return of their children in spite of the pressure they feel is being brought to bear to accomplish it.
b) in a substantial number of cases repatriation is asked for by the mother only though we have both parents' names on our records.
c) the parents' address is either omitted or vague or differs greatly from that in our dossier - in one case the father being in a sanatorium.
d) information as to children's whereabouts is extremely vague. In most cases the address Southampton is given but this seems more excusable than the giving of a wrong address which occurs in 43 cases.
The children's Basque numbers are given correctly in a very few cases only, and in most cases omitted. Even the child's name in two or three cases is strangely different from that in our files: e.g. Martinez Lopez Angel and Ignacio are given under Martinez Diaz Darana.
