Press communique : 20th meeting of the Committee

              INTERNATIONAL COMMITTEE FOR THE APPLICATION OF THE AGREEMENT REGARDING NON-INTERVENTION IN SPAIN.

The twentieth meeting of the Committee was held at the Foreign Office to-day at 11 a.m.
2. Lord Plymouth referred to certain reports which had appeared in the press that morning regarding discussions which had taken place at the meeting of the Chairman's Sub-Committee held on the previous day.     He took a very serious view of these reports, some of which were highly misleading and untrue, as would be seen from the official communique issued with the authority of the Sub-Committee at the conclusion of the meeting, which was the only authorised account of the discussions which had taken place.
3. The Committee were informed that the observation scheme had been duly brought into operation by land and sea at midnight 19th/20th April, 1937.     In the initial period the scheme had been operated on a skeleton basis, but the recruiting of the international staff had proceeded rapidly, and, on the 30th April, the scheme was in full operation both by land and sea.
The staff engaged on the sea observation scheme comprised nationals of seventeen countries, that on the Franco-Spanish frontier nationals of thirteen countries, and that on the Gibraltar-Spanish frontier nationals of three countries.
