October 5th, 1938.
REFORT ON ACTIVITIES DURING THE CRISIS.
1. All homes were circularised instructing them to get in touch with their local Air Raid Wardens, and most of them replied that they had already done so and that gas masks had been issued to the children.
2. Certain homes stated that they would have to be evacuated in the event of war. These were:
Montrose
Watermillock
Cardiff
Middlesbrough
Guildford
Carshalton
Cambridge
Woolwich
Wickham Market.
Of these, evacuations were carried out only in the case of the last two. The Woolwich children went to Bray Court, and returned to Woolwich on October 3rd, and the Wickham Market children were distributed between Worthing, Keighley, Brampton and private families. They have now all returned to Wickham Market. Full plans for the evacuation of the other centres were prepared but were happily unnecessary.
3. The following homes were prepared to take additional children if evacuation from other homes had been necessary :
Camberley (50-100)
Faringdon (8, plus their own boys in London)
Blackboys (10)
Leeds (5)
Leicester ( Evington ) (6)
Plymouth (10); (would need payment and additional staff).
Street (10)
Worthing (20)
Wakefield (25-30)
Keighley (50)
Bray (24)
Birkenhead (20-25, possibly more)
Bradford (2)
4. The following homes (other than those which might have had to be evacuated) stated they were unable to take additional children:
Colwyn Bay
Bristol
Huddersfield
Witney
Sheffield.
