Minutes of General Council (extract) : with appendix A: statement by the National Council of Labour on the bombing of Guernica

              Item 102.   Spain.      (a) Bilbao situation.  
The General Secretary supplemented this Minute to the effect that he had told Mr. Eden that the Council might want to see him again on the Bilbao situation in view of the bad position there which required immediate action.
In response to a request, he then reported fully on action he had taken at the request of representatives of the Basque Government.
On the motion of Mr. Bevin,
IT WAS DECIDED that when the S.S. "Backworth" had discharged its cargo, an announcement should be made in the press on action taken by the Labour Movement, including an explanation why publicity had not been given until the goods were safely landed.
IT WAS FURTHER DECIDED that a strong resolution should be drafted denouncing the criminal bombing of Guernica, and calling attention to the use made of German airplanes in this connection.
For resolution, see Appendix A.
Mr. Marchbank moved, and
IT WAS DECIDED that a further appeal to the Labour Movement be made for help for the International Solidarity Fund.
That was ADOPTED.  It was understood that the Finance and General Purposes Committee would act as a deputation to Mr. Eden should that course be necessary.
