MINUTES OF A MEETING OF THE BASQUE CHILDREN'S ADMINISTRATIVE SUB-COMMITTEE held at 4, Great Smith St., London S.W.1 on Tuesday November 1st, 1938 at 5 p.m.
PRESENT: Dr. Richard Ellis (in the Chair) Dame Janet Campbell Mr. H.V. Tewson Miss Pye Miss Betty Arne Dr. Betty Morgan (ex-officio)
1. APOLOGIES FOR ABSENCE: Received from Lady Layton, Mrs.Gee.
2. MINUTES OF THE LAST MEETING: The minutes of the meeting of October 25th having been circulated, were taken as read and confirmed.
3. BUSINESS ARISING FROM THE MINUTES:
(a ) Proposal to send 50 older boys to an Agricultural Training School at Cabrils, Catalunya. The Secretary reported that Mr. Donald Darling, just returned to London from Catalunya, had provisionally arranged with Dr. Audrey Russell on the spot that 50 places should be reserved for Basque boys from England. Arrangements could not however be completed until the administrator of the Cabrils School returned from a short visit to Paris. It was agreed to proceed with the selection of the boys in accordance with the instructions laid down by the Executive Committee at its meeting on October 14th. It was further agreed that Mr. Angus McCowen ( recommended by Miss Dorothy Thomson ), should visit the Homes, in a voluntary capacity, for expenses only, to help with the selection of the boys. A further suggestion that Mr. McCowen should ultimately represent the Basque Children's Committee at the Cabrils School was referred to the forthcoming meeting of the Executive Committee on November 7th.
(b) Brighton Home. Miss Betty Arne reported on the visit made by herself and Mr. Thackrah to the Brighton Home on October 29th-30th. As a result of detailed investigations Miss Arne recommended:
(1) That Mr. Gamble Jones, secretary of the Brighton Committee, should completely sever his connection both with the Committee and with the Home.
(2) That a letter of resignation sent from Mr. Jones to the Brighton Committee and accepted by them at an emergency meeting on October 30th, should also be accepted as from the London office.
(3) That Mr. Jones, at his own request, should be allowed to leave articles of furniture at the Brighton Home at his own risk but that he should be required to send an inventory of these effects to the London office. Neither the Brighton Committee nor the Basque Children's Committee should be held responsible for any damage or loss.
