BASQUE CHILDREN'S CAMP, STONEHAM, EASTLEIGH
I am in agreement with the report by Mr. Harries about our visit on Wednesday.
I would like to emphasise that in my view the major part of this week's muddle at the Camp is due essentially the the fact that last week there was no-one down there capable of sitting down and trying to envisage the problems of organising the Camp and seeing that 4,000 children were adequately fed. Had any attempt been made to find suitable directors for the various departments and to organise the necessary voluntary labour the confusion we saw would have been avoided. A considerable amount of difficulty would still have remained on account of the habits and lack of discipline of the children and of the insufficiency of interpreters, but the confusion in the Camp is not due to the children but to the fact that no-one is in charge and so everybody is in charge.
The women helpers I spoke to said that the children's food was good and well cooked. Apart from the two occasions mentioned by Mr. Harries when an insufficient supply of bread was received, they
