Dear Mr. Throup,
SAVE THE BASQUE CHILDREN FUND.
Very many thanks for your letter of the 7th instant enclosing cheque for £50 for which I enclose our official receipt. I should like to say how we appreciate the magnificent work which you are doing in the raising of funds and are glad that our suggestion in regard to the "Daily Herald" turned out all right.
We will keep in mind the suggestions you make, but you will appreciate that it is difficult to appeal publicly to Labour Town Councils only. I think the best course is for our own organisations to take the lead in getting a Town's Committee set up irrespective of the political character of the local governing body. It may then be possible with the co-operation of all religious and social organisations in the area to maintain regular contributions by means of getting them to pay the expenses of one child each week. I may say this is being tried out very successfully in my own locality. Would it be possible in Nelson?
Yours sincerely,
Assistant Secretary.
