BASQUE CHILDREN FUND.
Your letter of the 19th instant addressed to Mr. Tewson and marked personal was opened by his private secretary in order to discover whether it was sufficiently important to forward to Mr. Tewson while on holiday. As it is dealing with the Basque Children Fund she has asked me to reply, because I am on that Committee with Mr. Tewson.
When it was decided to accommodate 4,000 refugee children in this country, everyone knew it was going to be a big job, but nobody realised all the difficulties that would result.
The Camp in Southampton was passed as satisfactory by the local Health Authority and had to be drastically modified within 48 hours because of the very great difference in standards of hygiene and sanitation between these children and ourselves.
The number of voluntary assistants employed in the Camp was cut down as quickly and as drastically as possible for fear of infectious disease spreading amongst the private population in Southampton, also because it was found practically impossible to limit the number of people using the Camp as a show place, with very great detriment to the behaviour and wellbeing of the children.
