I enclose a statement dealing very briefly with two questions affecting the welfare of the Basque children:
(i) Hostile rumours being circulated about the children.
(ii) The position with regard to the return of children to their parents.
My Committee is already indebted to you for financial support, and I am asking now for support of another sort. Through your friends, in the national and local press, by letter or, if you are able, in articles, you can assist the Committee to correct any false impression that a very few really minor difficulties seem to be creating.
I think the position has been admirably stated by the matron of one the Homes, who has had wide experience with the children; "It is a pity that small children should be the butts of people who are trying to make capital out of a purely humanitarian effort. No mention is made of nine hundred and ninety-nine good cases but the thousandth is sprung upon by people who wish to make political capital out of it, and are the very ones who have rendered no assistance in the matter."
