Dear Dr. Jones,
EDUCATION OF BASQUE CHILDREN.
With further reference to our telephone conversation of yesterday afternoon I write to say that the National Committee for Basque Children (the Chairman of which is the Duchess of Atholl, M.P., and the Hon. Secretaries, Mr. Wilfred Roberts, M.P., Captain J.R.J. Macnamara, M.P., and Mr. D.R. Grenfell, M.P.), have asked me to investigate the possibilities of obtaining a grant to assist in the vocational education of the older Basque boys who are at present in England.
There are 178 who are 15 years of age and over, and 518 who are over 14 years of age. These lads are in homes and hostels all over the country, and are likely to be here for some months longer.
The need for educating them and helping them to use the most valuable years of their lives presents a problem of very great difficulty, mainly because there are so few people in this country who speak Spanish.
The Committee has not agreed to any definite scheme of education, but it is clear it will depend upon the conditions of the locality in which the lads reside. For example there are 40 of them in Carmarthenshire, and anything we can do for them will have to be in the nature of rural industry.
