FOREWORD
Altho the trial of the POUM leaders in Barcelona commenced the 11th of October the censorship of the Spanish government did not allow the Spanish press to publish one single line of the proceedings untill October 25th.
The continuous flow of protests sent to the Spanish authorities by workers organizations, political parties, intelectuals, lawyers, and well known personalities from all over the world have undoubtedly influenced the government decisions and obliged it to change its tactics.
In spite of the great secrecy in which the trial took place (only about 20 persons were allowed in the court roora each day) the news soon spread among the workers and the government and political circles of Barcelona. The defence of the POUM was voiced by workers in their Trade Union meetings; by foreign newspaper men such is Schoflo, Swedish delegate to the S.I.A. Congress in Barcelona; and by a daily Bulletin published by the POUM and distributed to all workers and political organizations.
We have gathered here the reports published in the Spanish press, especially that of the C.N.T., with some additional explanatory notes which will be useful in understanding and evaluating the events that are taking place in Spain to-day.
