Dear Miss Harris,
I am very much obliged to you for your personal and unofficial letter of the 14th September, and for the confidential information you gave me about the Spanish Medical Aid Unit and its experiences in Paris. I am quite sure that what you have said will not be regarded as criticism, and certainly not by me, as I agree in the main with all that you have said.
I agree that staying a week in Paris was a complete waste of time. I did not know that it would cost a lot of money, but I opposed the sending out of the Unit from Great Britain, as Chairman of the Committee, until such times as all the details were settled, but I was out-voted on the Committee by those who wished to make the demonstration early for publicity reasons, from the point of view of encouraging subscriptions to our funds.
I think the mistake we originally made was that only one lorry would be sufficient for the unit. As it happens the unit really needs three or four ambulances.
As regards the personnel, it was an impossibility to choose better personnel. We could only choose those who volunteered, and from the medical
