DR. H.B. MORGAN
MR. H.V. TEWSON
Social Insurance.
28th November, 1936.
SPANISH MEDICAL AID COMMITTEE.
I hope you won't think me a nuisance, but I will be very glad if, for my own private, confidential and personal use, you will help me with your advice as to whether I should resign my Chairmanship of the Spanish Medical Aid Committee at the forthcoming General Meeting, which I understand is to be held on the 12th December.
It has been a terrible job being Chairman of this rather difficult Committee, with its rather mixed personnel, and at times I have had to carry out a policy which I have often, though Chairman, borne the brunt of opposing in Committee. The situation gives me a great deal of personal worry which I did not bargain for when I was persuaded, in spite of my reluctance, to take on the Chairmanship.
You know the circumstances of the first meeting. I was summoned there like others, as a member of the Socialist Medical Association. When I got to the meeting I found it was not a meeting of the Socialist Medical Association, but called at the instance of the Socialist Medical Association to all sympathisers of the Spanish Government to organise ambulance and medical supplies for the Government side. In the absence of all the prominent members of the Medical Association except Dr. Brook, on holiday, I was offered the Chairmanship, but declined it, until it was perfectly obvious that if I did not take it, having regard to the composition of the first General Meeting, it would have been awarded to a Communist. Dr. Brook had already accepted the Secretaryship, and it was only at his personal request and that of others round, that with great diffidence I took on the Chairmanship. Having taken it on I felt that I had to continue, but, as I said before, I did not anticipate the difficulties which have arisen and the anxieties and worries it has caused me.
Dr. Brook has intimated that he is resigning on the
