Spain
4, Aberdare Gardens,
Hampstead, LONDON, N.W.6.
12th July, 1937.
Lord Churchill,
Mision Sanitaria Britanica,
VALENCIA,
Spain.
Dear Churchill,
I was so glad to get your letter of the 1st July, which was passed on to me by Dr. Fuhrman. You may rest assured that I shall always be delighted to hear from you with a record, first, of your success, secondly, frankly of your difficulties, and thirdly, candidly of any criticism that you think, in the best interests of our work, you should make. You may take it from me that I, personally, will never take criticism as out of place; but from you I know it will be meant to be helpful and constructive. A great deal of the criticism we have had from some people who have returned from Spain has been petty and small. Even when it has appeared most devastating it has turned out on examination as trivial trash. But one knows that your views are based on sound observation and good reasoning, and therefore you may take it from me, personally, that any comment that you make will always be most carefully considered.
The situation in Spain at the moment seems to me to be most frightfully interesting, and I saw Fuhrman on Saturday, the 3rd inst., and had a long talk with him. I tried to get fully beneath the skin of the whole difficulty, and I think I have got the problem now, as far as regards the future of organisation and reorganisation, at my fingers ends. I will not be sure of this, however, until I get out to Spain. The Committee has now asked me to go out to Spain as soon as possible, and I propose to leave England on the 27th July and to spend about a fortnight in Spain. I want to be back for hospital duty round about the 5th August, and I would like to have a few days of rest and holiday before then.
I should like to see you very much in Valencia and to be kept in close contact with you during my tour
/ in Spain.
