As you are aware, we wrote to the British Foreign Secretary on the 1st October in regard to the above, who was we understand the treasurer of the Agricultural Workers' Union in Spain, and who was, we were informed, likely to be executed after his arrest by the Spanish authorities.
Mr Bevin informed us on the 1st October that from a private source, the British Ambassador in Spain was informed that Senor Marquez Sanchez had been arrested on a political charge and condemned to thirty years' imprisonment.
The Ambassador's imformant, however understood that Sanchez had applied to be released provisionally and that his request had been granted. Mr Bevin promised us further information.
