SPANISH REPUBLIC GAINS GROUND
With the aim of damping down the enthusiasm felt inside Spain at the news of the meeting of the Cortes of the Republic in Mexico and the appointment as Provisional President of Senor Martinez Barrio, Franco's propaganda has launched a wishful-thinking campaign regarding "splits" among the Republicans based on the fact that not all anti-Franco forces are represented in the new Government.
This course is also being followed abroad by those circles which helped to establish Franco's regime and who today try to find means of prolonging that regime in Spain against the will of the Spanish people.
The newspaper "The Catholic Times", for example, in its issue of the 7th September, speaks of "splits" among the Republicans following on the formation of the new Government.
However, all the world knows that the setting in motion of the constitutional Republican institutions has been carried out in Mexico in an atmosphere of absolute unanimity between all Republican sections. It is well known that during August a series of meetings took place between all the Spanish anti-Franco forces. The result of those meetings was an absolute agreement that the Republican institution must be re-formed, including the post of President of the Republic.
In accordance with this resolve, an extraordinary meeting of the Cortes was convened in Mexico on the 22nd August, at which the oath as Provisional President of the Spanish Republic was taken by D. Diego Martinez Barrio amidst general aclamation.
This action received the warmest sympathy from all friends of the Spanish people and its importance was not ignored by the world's press.
Inside Spain, naturally, it caused serious repercussions.
