"FRANCO MUST GO"
World labor this week unexpectedly placed a demand that the United Nations sever relations with Franco Spain, on the unofficial agenda of the great Golden Gate World Security Conference to be held in San Francisco the 25th of this month.
'News on Spain', weekly bulletin of the Veterans of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade, has just received behind-the-scenes reports of European developments which prepared this new step toward restoration of the Spanish Republic.
The reports cover independent but related actions by the World Trade Union Conference in London and the combined French Resistance and trade union movement in Paris.
Both bodies are revealed to have strongly endorsed the program of armed struggle against Franco backed by Spanish Republican exiles loyal to Premier Juan Negrin and by the Supreme Junta of National Union which directs the Spanish Underground.
A one-paragraph news-agency dispatch has said that a mass meeting in Paris launched the anti-Franco drive and assailed the decision of General de Gaulle to reopen Franco consulates, termed "centers of espionage on behalf of international fascism."
Also noted briefly in the press generally was a smaller meeting of key French leaders, which demanded investigation of reports that Franco shipping was supplying Nazi garrisons in German "hold-out" pockets on the French coast.
The latter meeting was attended by Francois Mauriac, Catholic conservative writer; Pierre Cot, former Air Minister, for the Socialists; Florimond Bonte, for the Communists; Louis Saillant, head of the trade union movement and of the Resistance, was chairman.
Hitherto unpublished, however, are the following accounts of London and Paris developments, privately reported to News on Spain.
