MINUTES OF MEETING OF THE SPANISH RELIEF COMMITTEE OF THE STANDING JOINT COMMITTEE CF INDUSTRIAL WOMEN'S ORGANISATIONS HELD ON THURSDAY, JANUARY 18th, 1940. AT 2.30 p.m. AT THE NATIONAL TRADE UNION CLUB, GREAT NEWPORT STREET. LONDON, W. C. 2.
PRESENT: Mrs. Ayrton Gould (in the Chair), Miss Adam,
Miss Colman, Mrs. Leighton and Miss Sutherland (Secretary).
APOLOGIES FOR ABSENCE:
Apologies for absence were received from Miss Elliott, Mrs. Hastings, Mrs. Malone, and Mrs. Rackham.
MINUTES:
The Minutes of the meeting held on May 11th, which had been circulated, were confirmed and signed.
SECRETARY'S REPORT:
(a) Provision of Knitted Garments:
The Secretary reported that since the last meeting garments had been distributed as follows:- Basque children 464, Czech refugees 534, evacuated mothers and children (through the L.C.C.) 259 - a total of 1,257. In addition, a number of Knitting Committees had been advised since the outbreak of war to use garments they had knitted for local evacuees. These garments brought the total of garments completed since the last meeting to about 1400.
The total number of knitted garments provided by the Committee since its inception exceeded 72,000. In addition 10,000 garments had been purchased from the C.W.S. in 1936. Practically all the wool supplied had now been accounted for. Committees with amounts still outstanding were being asked to complete the work.
(b ) Finance :
The Secretary reported that the total receipts amounted to £1,891. 9. lOd., consisting of £1,280 from the International Solidarity Fund, £100 from the Miners' Federation of Great Britain, £40 from the sale of articles made by Spanish women and children and £470. 10. lid., donations from Women's Sections and other organisations and from individuals.
Expenditure showed £1004. 12. l0d. spent on the purchase of ready-made garments, £843. 5. 7d. on wool, £12. 4. 7d. on freight charges. £30 had been transferred to the fund for German and other refugees. This amount represented a proportion of donations which had been sent to be used either for Spain or for other refugees.
The balance in the fund was £2. 11. 0.
The Secretary's report was received and after discussion it was AGREED
(1) That the work of the Spanish Relief Committee should now be wound up.
