              SPANISH MEDICAL AID COMMITTEE
Minutes of meeting held at 24 New Oxford Street, W.C.1., on October 5th 1938.
Present: Professor J.R. Marrack (Chairman), Mrs. I. Brown, Mrs. Leah Manning, Dr. J. Wright, Lady Hastings, Messrs. R. Calder, J. Coyne, C.H. Norman, Drs. S.W. Jeger and H. Joules, Miss N. Adam, Mr. G. Jeger.
An apology was received from Dr. Morgan, who is unwell.
1) Minutes of meeting held on September 28th were confirmed and signed, with two alterations.     Mr. Coyne's name was added to those from whom apologies for absence had been received, and the phrase " Dr. Joules did not recommend sanatorium treatment at present for Miss Lowe " was deleted.
2) Matters arising.
a) The Organising Secretary reported that he had installed Nurse Low in Hastings for a month.   Dr. Joules stated that it had been impossible for him to persuade her to go into a sanatorium at present, but he intended to do so later.   It was agreed that she should not return to Spain, but this decision is not to be conveyed to her until the end of her month's rest.
b) Complaints regarding Instruments.   Mr. Drew of Down Brothers had stated that all our plated instruments were chromium plated on nickel plate, on copper on lead, and this should be adequate protection. Those that had turned black had done so as the result of sterilisation in undistilled water in copper sterilisers.   An electrical pole was set up which would turn the instruments blackish.   He advised the placing of a piece of aluminium in the steriliser, which would preserve the colour of the instruments without affecting them in any other way.   At the same time, he is perfectly prepared to replace any faulty instruments if they are returned.
c) Mr. Norman stated that he had sent to the Charity Organisation Society for their investigation a leaflet issued by the Voluntary Industrial Aid.     It was stated that this organisation had been collecting money for sending letters to Germany.    It was decided that Messrs. Tanner and Adams who are members of that Committee be invited to our next meeting to discuss the matter.
d) No reply had been received from Miss Davson regarding nurses for Barcelona, but in the meantime a cable had been received from Mr. Holst in Valencia asking for two nurses and two drivers to be sent to Ucles. It was agreed to send to Ucles Nurses Hathaway and Bowden, who are ready for service, but not to send any new drivers.
Arising therefrom, a discussion took place on the need for nurses in Spain, in which it was definitely stated that they were only required now to work in base hospitals, and that those who are at present on leave in this country must agree to this before they return to Spain.
