SPANISH MEDICAL AID COMMITTEE
Minutes of meeting held at 24 New Oxford Street, W.C.1., on October 26th 1938.
Present: Dr. H.B. Morgan (Chairman), Mrs. Manning, Dr. Joyce Wright, Mr. T. Blewitt, Mr. Ritchie Calder, Dr. Gillison, Dr. Joules, Professor J.R. Marrack, Mr. Le Gros Clark, Mr. Peacock.
1) Minutes of the previous meeting, held on October 19th, were confirmed and signed.
2) Matters arising:
a) Dr. Morgan reported that Miss Chappell had attended the preliminary meeting of the Committee organising the "Food and Freedom for Spain" Conference, owing to his inability to attend. Arrangements were being made to hold the Conference at Friends' House on November 12th and a Public Meeting at the Holborn Empire on November 13th.
b) Mr. Norman read a letter he had received from the Charity Organisation Society respecting the Voluntary Industrial Aid. It was agreed that a meeting of representatives from our Committee and Mr. Adam and his colleagues be held as soon as possible.
3) Correspondence:
a) A letter was read from the London Federation of Peace Councils inviting us to send delegates to a Conference on Collective Peace Action which was being held on December 2nd and 3rd. It was agreed that Mr. Trevor Blewitt represent the Committee.
b) Parliamentary Committee for Spain. A letter inviting us to send a doctor to speak at the Conference on November 12th was read. It was agreed that we ask Mr. Sinclair-Loutit to speak.
4) Report of Personnel and Technical Sub-Committee.
a) Mrs. Manning read a letter from Ena Vassie intimating that she was unable to return to Spain.
b) Lilian Urmston had written expressing her willingness to return to Spain to work in a base hospital.
c) Penelope Phelps. It was agreed that Penelope Phelps be asked to meet the Personnel and Technical Sub-Committee.
d) Mrs. Winifred Bates. Mrs. Manning reported on a letter she had received from Mrs. Bates stating that she was not going to America now as expected. It was agreed that Mrs. Manning should see Mrs. Bates and if circumstances were such that she thought financial help was needed, she she should have power to make the customary allowance, up to £8.0.0.
c) Ernst Toller. Dr. Morgan reported that the Trade Union Club had given a reception to Ernst Toller, and a collection of £13 has been made. Mr. Toller had a list of requirements for civil hospitals in Spain, which he had promised to forward to Dr. Morgan. He asked that this £13 be used for this purpose.
