SPANISH MEDICAL AID COMMITTEE
Minutes of meeting held at 24 New Oxford Street, W.C.1., on November 2nd 1938.
Present: Dr. H.B. Morgan (Chairman), Mrs. Manning, Dr. Joyce Wright Mr. Trevor Blewitt, Dr. Gillison, Dr. Joules, Professor J.R. Marrack, Mr. Le Gros Clark, Mr. Peacock, Mrs. Brown.
1) Minutes of the previous meeting, held on October 26th, were read.  It was agreed that item 4 (j) should read: "Having regard to the continued non-attendance of Mr. Hector Hughes at Committee Meetings, it was agreed that his membership should be regarded as lapsed." This amendment having been made, the minutes were signed.
2) Matters arising:
a) Dr. Morgan reported that Mrs. Brown, Mrs. Manning and he had met Mr. Adams and Mr. Joe Scott of Voluntary Industrial Aid, that Mr. Scott had not stayed for any of the conversation, and that, arising out of our consultations with Mr. Adams it was agreed that we would do everything in our power to help V.I.A. if they decided to reorganise, but that it was advisable that all the preliminary steps should be taken on their own initiative and not on ours.
b) Mrs. Manning reported that she had now received a letter from Mrs. Bates, stating that she hoped to be going to America after Christmas and that she would try to make her capital last out until then.     If that was not possible, she would be very grateful to accept the Committee's offer.     Mrs. Manning also reported that Mrs. Bates was doing extremely useful work helping in the office and with propaganda.
c) Dr. Joules reported that Nurse Low, who was anxious to go to a sanatorium, had now made application to go to Switzerland under the Queen Alexandra Sanatorium Fund. It was agreed that under the section of her application "Financial Position", it should be stated that Nurse Dorothy Low was dependent upon such work as she could obtain under the auspices of the Spanish Medical Aid Committee, that her health did not now permit her to continue that work, and that the resources of the Committee, which were of a charitable nature, were extremely low.
3) Interviews:
a) Dr. Jolly gave an extremely interesting account of his work in Spain.     He congratulated the Committee on the work which Rosita Davson was performing as their representative in Barcelona, and stated that her happy relationship with the Sanidad made the work of the S.M.A.C. in Spain run very smoothly.     He also reported on the excellent work that was being done at Sabinosa and said that he hoped the Committee would fulfil every list sent us by Mavis since she was responsible for the X-ray work on all the fracture cases for the Ebro Front.     He was extremely complimentary about the work of the whole equipe at Sabinosa, which comprises three English people, Mavis King, Ann Organ and Jim Smythe, working together on the Autochir with a Spanish driver Simon.     Dr. Joules suggested that future lists should always include gloves and other types of rubber goods, catgut and instruments.     He also suggested that we should try to send to Spain mobile electrical lighting units with an output of 11 amps and at least 1000 watts.
