Dear Sir Walter Citrine,
At the suggestion of Mr Ernest Bevin, I am writing to place the following facts before you:-
1. As you doubtless know, the Dependants and Wounded Aid Committee has undertaken two tasks to raise money to care for the families of the members of the British Battalion of the International Brigade in Spain and
2. To provide medical care for those men who are in hospital in Spain and in this country. There are at present, for example, five wounded members of the Battalion in Middlesex Hospital and others in hospital in London and all over the country. Another 150 wounded men are expected home shortly. For all these we provide medical attention and in many cases artificial limbs.
The majority of the members of the Battalion are Trade Unionists and are, in fact, listed at Battalion headquarters according to their Unions.
The task of raising the necessary amount for these two purposes - £700 per week - is a very considerable one. Whilst our balance sheet for the period June 7th to October 30th shows that we have received gratifying Trade Union support, the amounts received weekly fluctuate rather widely.
