              SPANISH MEDICAL AID COMMITTEE
Minutes of meeting held on 7th June 1939 at 69 Great Russell Street.
Present: Professor J.R. Marrack (Chairman), Mr. C.H. Norman, Mr. J. Coyne, Dr. J. Wright, Mrs. I. Brown, Mrs. L. Manning, Dr. H.B. Morgan, Dr. J.A. Gillison, Dr. S.W. Jeger, Mr. R. Calder, Mr. G. Jeger.
Apologies for absence were received from Messrs. Blewitt and Le Gros Clark and the Countess of Huntingdon.
1) Minutes of previous meeting held on the 24th May were confirmed and signed, after the names of Miss Adam and Mr. Blewitt had been added to those who had been present.
2) Matters arising therefrom:
a) Disposal of the instruments returned from Spain.     The 14 cases had arrived at London Docks but were not yet released by the Customs Authorities, who were demanding proof of their British origin.     Discussions were proceeding.
b) Professor Marrack reported that he and Mrs. Manning had seen Dr. Quemada.     He was quite willing to go to Mexico if he could obtain some assurance that the work he would do there would be in accordance with his qualifications.     Arrangements had been made for him to see the Spanish ex-Ambassador to London, and the matter was being taken up with the British Committee for Refugees from Spain.
c) Medicaments for the S.S. " Sinaia ".     The C.S.I. had reported that they had been able to fulfil almost the whole order.     This had meant keeping the laboratories and suppliers working day and night, and they warned us that this would not be possible again. The bills for the goods purchased had arrived.  They amounted to £168 which included about £68 expended on equipment (sets of instruments etc.) for the 15 Spanish doctors.     In addition we would be receiving bills for the medical material bought by Dr. Russell in the South of France when she feared that the C.S.I. would not be able to fulfil the requirements.     It was estimated that this would amount to about £70.
Mrs. Brown stated that she had heard from the officials on the boat that they were very satisfied with the medical material provided.
d) The Film of the Camps.     The C.S.I. after discussion had agreed to reduce the price of the English rights of this film to the equivalent of £80.     The N.J.C. had accordingly asked us to procure this and to get a copy of the film sent over. They were also spending about £200 on a supplementary film dealing with the departure of the S.S. " Sinaia " etc., and asked whether we could contribute towards the cost of these two films.     It was decided to take no action.
e) An assurance had been received from the Foreign Office that the British Consuls in Valencia and Burgos would do everything possible to ensure the safety of Miss Madge Addy.     They stated however that there was complete chaos in Spain, with the result that official documents or sanction to leave were difficult to obtain.
f) The Organising Secretary reported that he had had a talk with Dr. Duran on Friday June 2nd.     It appears that he is not in financial need;    he states that he has sufficient to live on for the next 3 weeks, in addition to which he is expecting a payment of £10 for some work he has done.     He promised to inform us when this was exhausted.
