A SCOTTISH AMBULANCE UNIT IN SPAIN 
Since September of last year a Spanish Ambulance Unit has been lending its services in Spain. It has been established by Sir Daniel Macaulay Stevenson, Chancellor of Glasgow University, who is a great Spanish scholar, founder of a Spanish professorship in the aforesaid University, and of the interchange of students between Spanish and Scottish Universities. In the year 1935 the Republic gave this great friend of Spain the Grand Cross of Isabel the Catholic, being the only Scot who displays this distinction.
This Ambulance Unit, directed by Miss Fernanda Jacobsen, was formed expressly to go to Spain, and went to Madrid with six ambulances and a van. It has operated since then in the fronts round Madrid and in those of Tajo, suffering some misfortunes of war:  in Parla an ambulance was destroyed by the Fascist combs [bombs]; in the road of Carabanchel another ambulance was captured.
In December, the Ambulance Unit returned to Scotland for reorganisation, and returned in January augmented in its material and willing to lend its services more efficaciously to those wounded and ill in the Republican Army.
