THE Spanish Government's offensive on all fronts marks a new phase in the war in Spain.  But the victories have been achieved at a heavy price. With deepening horror and sadness we receive accounts of the appalling casualties.
The stream of wounded and dying men passing through our hospitals has been ceaseless; nurses, surgeons, and ambulance drivers have worked themselves to a standstill; the call for more and more surgical and medical supplies has been overwhelming. Nevertheless, so far as the limit of our means would allow we have met every demand which has been made upon us. You may easily imagine how great has been the strain upon the resources of our organisation as a result.
The Spanish Medical Aid Committee has never been in a position to keep reserve funds for emergencies; always the need has been so urgent that we have spent every penny as we have received it. Now at the crest of our most strenuous work in Spain we find our funds nearly exhausted. But our work must go on. The Spanish Government, with which we are closely co-operating, has asked us for a complete new hospital unit. The task for which this unit is designed is both responsible and dangerous and the cost of equipping and maintaining it will be heavy. But we are determined to respond to the appeal which has been made to us and therefore we turn to those who have never failed to come to our aid in the past.
Some of those who have gone out under our auspices have made the greatest sacrifice of all, in that they have given their lives. Dr. Randall Sollenberger was killed while tending the wounded on the battlefield. Julian Bell, Issy Kupchik, Harold Verstage, and Vincent Hunt were killed driving their ambulances; two of our drivers are missing; several drivers and a nurse have been wounded. We ask for no such sacrifice from you. Your part is simpler; we only ask you to give - but please give quickly and give generously.
The need is desperate; the fight is for the liberty of a people and the defence of world democracy.   Your part in that fight may be played here and now!
